Our U16's travelled into Thomond Park on Sunday to contest the North Munster league Cup Final v Shannon RFC. A repeat of last year's Pan Munster Final in which the Nenagh lads won well. The boys were nonetheless cautious facing a much stronger Shannon side. The lads started well and worked the ball up the field, the forwards providing good ball to the backs who moved the ball well with good hands and carries. After ten minutes Matt Leyden made a super carry on the wing and his speed saw him over the line for a great try, Dean Carey converted. However Shannon fought back and seven mins later all was level. Nenagh hit back immediately, Oisin Ryan crossed for a try after great rucking by the lads put great pressure on Shannon . Again Dean converted. Nenagh overturned a Shannon scrum 5 minutes later and Darragh Murphy got in for the next try, with Dean converting to add to his tally. With the boys leading 21-7 Matt Leyden crossed for a great try after a great run down the wing. Dean Carey kept up his incredible accuracy and converted. Shannon however weren't giving up and fought hard to get the next two tries and keep the contest alive .Nenagh were under a bit of pressure now with only nine points between the sides and almost ten minutes left .
The boys never looked like they were going to lose this game though and were the stronger team overall but they could not relax. It was only with 3 mins left on the clock when Sean Stone got an excellent try and Dean converted once more that the lads knew the cup was theirs. Nenagh won on a final score of 35-22.There were brilliant performances all round from the whole squad, who have worked hard all year and have learned and grown in confidence and strength from game to game. As the season comes to a close we have only the North Munster Cup left. The boys face Ennis in the semi final in Lisatunny next Saturday evening with a 6 o'clock kickoff. All support would be greatly appreciated .Well done to the boys on a great win over Shannon to bring home some silverware. Hopefully there may be more to follow.
