Nenagh Ormond U16 24 UL Bohemians U16 10
Nenagh Ormond under 16s played the first round of the pan Munster cup against UL Bohemians on Sunday last. While conditions were very difficult, a very entertaining game was played out. Nenagh started the game very well and took the game to Bohs from the off. They broke the deadlock after about 15 minutes started by a powerful carry from Aron Griffin in midfield followed by quick ball releasing the backs where the ball made its way to Cian Murphy who scored in the corner. Nenagh were on the Bohs 5 metre line soon after but failed to convert a promising attacking position after a strike play in midfield. However, Nenagh kept the momentum going and scored again after good link play between forwards and backs. A brilliant carry from Robbie O’Brien was followed up by Shaun Murphy who spotted a gap and dotted down under the posts. Bohs came back at Nenagh and very unlucky not to score. Initially it looked like the ball was held up but the ref called it back for 5 metre scrum which Nenagh defended brilliantly to hold out. The half time score was 12-0.
Nenagh started the second half with an error and that led to Bohs scoring in the corner after good link play. They followed up very quickly with an intercept try to leave the score 12-10 and all to play for. Nenagh showed great character to wrestle back control of the game after those setbacks. Luke Slattery, who came on at half time, made a big impact with some powerful carries. Aron Griffin carried through a hole in defence and was brought down by a last ditch ankle tap. The ball found its way to Fionn Wallace, who carried very well all game, and from that ruck up popped Shaun Murphy who spotted a hole in the defence to touch down for his second try. Nenagh controlled the game with some clever kicking by Cody O’Connor and Harry Walsh, and after one of the kicks Nenagh found themselves attaching just inside the 22. Tomas Tierney carried the ball well into the 22 and then Cody O’Connor fed Luke Slattery who made great yards in a very tight space. From Luke’s carry Nenagh were camped on the Bohs line and after a few picks and drives, Luke powered his way over the line. The referee blew the final whistle soon after with the final score 24-10 in Nenagh’s favour. Overall Nenagh played well in very difficult conditions with some bits to work on as usual. Training continues Wednesday evenings.
