Shannon RFC hosted Nenagh Ormond in the North Munster Under 13 Plate Final last Sunday in what turned out to be a very tense, tight tussle. Shannon won the toss and opted to play with the wind and they got off to the perfect start. Nenagh claimed the drop off and after a couple of phases the outside centre for Shannon read the play very well and intercepted a pass to score under the posts. The conversion was added to make it 7-0 to them. Nenagh responded quite well and after a good turnover in midfield Aidan Ryan showed a clean pair of heels to round the defence and score. The difficult conversion into the wind was missed. From the drop off there was some excellent forward play by Scott, Aidan and Anluan. Next up then were Joe and Monko to take play into Shannon territory. Marcus then showed his quick thinking and moved the ball down the blind side to Donagh who showed great footwork and pace to beat 2-3 defenders. The conversion was missed to leave the score 10-5. The next few minutes turned into a tussle with lots of turnovers. After a break in play Nenagh had a scrum in which they used a strike play. The pack laid down the marker and from this Kaden passed to Donagh who spotted a gap in midfield, beat the last defender and scored. It was an excellent team try finished brilliantly. Back came Shannon and probably the most defining moment of the game came with 2 mins to go before half time. Shannon were going through a purple patch and were destined to score in the corner but an unbelievable tackle from Oisin in the corner and then Hugo stopped any further threat. The half time score was 15-7. The second half was an even tighter tussle. There were some good turnovers from Anluan, Shaun and Shane and from one of these the ball was moved wide to James who showed great pace to round the defender and then step the 15 to score. Shannon scored next to leave the score at 20-12. Nenagh did not sit back and took the game to Shannon and were very unfortunate not to score again. Freddie in particular was very unlucky not to score after showing excellent pace to beat 2 defenders out wide. It was a super performance from every player who took to the field. The eagerness to chop down the attackers was best witnessed all season. It is a tribute to the boys’ hard work that they saved this effort for their biggest game so far. Training continues Wednesday.
