Munster Club U18.5 Cup

Nenagh Ormond U18.5s kicked off their Munster Cup campaign at home to Sunday’s Well in New Ormond Park last Sunday.  After a particularly wet week, luck was on our side and just a small amount of rain fell before kick off.

Right from that kick off Sunday’s Well reclaimed the ball and came on the attack.  Nenagh were defending for long periods, finding it hard to get out of their own half for the opening ten minutes, and were lucky that a strong breeze prevented a Sunday’s Well penalty from being scored.  Eventually Nenagh got their hands on the ball and started to settle.  When fullback Mason Cawley’s kick put Nenagh inside the opposition 22, they won a penalty which they ran and, after several good carries by the forwards, Ivan Struzia powered over the try line.

Sunday’s Well then came straight back on the attack and, although Nenagh held out for atime, the visitors put some lovely phases together, eventually breaking down the touch line to score.  With the sides now tied the second quarter was a tense affair but Nenagh scored a second try before half time when Cawley again kicked and the new 50/22 rule saw them get an attacking lineout on the Sunday’s Well 5 metre line.  When the maul was held up just short, scrum half Luke Graham got his hands on the ball and got it out at just the right time.  Strong carries from Tristan Madden and Jack O’Flaherty and excellent handling from all of the backs followed before Tadhg O’Brien’s pace and strength took him over.  Joseph Gleeson converted to leave some breathing space at half time with a score of 12-5.

At half time Nenagh identified several areas that needed to be tidied up but, despite a renewed determination in the home side, the visitors were not about to let them have it all their own way.  Almost 15 minutes passed with no further score until replacement hooker Luke Conneally touched down twice.  His first try came after John Brislane carried hard off the back of a scrum followed by a second great carry from Tadhg O’Brien.  Conneally came onto the ball at pace just outside the 5 metre line and was unstoppable.  Minutes later loose forward Ivan Struzia was out in the back line where he spotted a gap, straightened up and sprinted through.  Tristan Madden was on hand to take his pop up off the ground and then the forwards stepped up once more to carry hard several times before Conneally broke through again. Despite the windy conditions, Gleeson managed to convert one of those tries to push the score out to 24-5.  However, after that Sunday’s Well came back to score and convertagain, pulling the gap back to 12 points.

For the Nenagh lads, this gap didn’t feel at all comfortable and when Sunday’s Well fumbled the kick off they were quick to pounce on the chance and capitalise.  Dylan Schweitnitzreacted quickly to gather the loose ball on the run and gallop to the try line.  Yet again Sunday’s Well showed their grit and they scored and converted another try before the final whistle.  Final score Nenagh Ormond 29-19 Sunday’s Well. Thanks to Sunday’s Well for a great game and thanks also to all that came out to support us.

This was a great start to our U18.5 Cup campaign which resumes again after Christmas.  Next week we return to North Munster League action with a home Semi Final against Old Crescent.  Kick off is on Sunday at 12pm and all support would be greatly appreciated.
